Opin tänään jotain uutta. Ja kello
ei ole vielä yhtätoistakaan. Opin nimittäin, että avun pyytäminen
helpottaisi elämää kovasti. Olen aina ollut tässä asiassa kovin
huono, en tahdo häiritä kanssaeläjiäni pyytämällä apua
juttuihin, jotka ovat a) itse hoidettavissa (vaikka aikaa menisi
kymmenkertaisesti) tai b) ei niiiin tärkeitä. Saan aina jotenkin
on mahdotonta kieltäytyä) pesemään pyykkimme, koska
pyykinepesukoneemme on jossain Mombasan ja Kampalan välillä. Olin
tästä toki erittäin ilahtunut, koska käytän mieluiten puhtaita
alusvaatteita. Ja koska muuttokuormamme on edelleen matkalla, olemme
myös vailla pyykinkuivaustelinettämme. Noh, onneksi tuossa
etupihalla on edellisen asukkaam jättämät pyykkinarut, joille
sitten asettelin pyykkimme kuivumaan.
En. Kysyinkö apua
joltakin muulta täällä pihapiirissä? No en. Virittelin lahjanarun
(?) ja kahden tuolin avustuksella omatekoisen pyykinkuivatustelineen
ja olinkin siitä hyvin ylpeä. Kunnes aloin ripustaa pyykkejä,
jotka olivat aivan liian painavia kahden heppoisen Ikea-tuolin
pideltäväksi, ja näinpä pyykkini olivat nätissä mytyssä
lattialla... Pyysinkö apua erittäin mukavalta naapurintädiltä tai
superavuliaalta siivojaltamme (joka oli siivoamassa
naapuriresidenssiä)? NO EN. Päätin roudata kaikkein painavimmat
tavarat varastostamme pitämään tuoleja paikoillaan. No se toimi.
Jotenkuten.
pyykit kuivumaan. Tänään aamulla ennen
siivojan tuloa ajattelin keräillä pois tämän huvitusta herättävän
taideteokseni jäljet. Mutta kas eipä ne pyykit siinä tiiviissä
läjässä olleet kovinkaan paljoa kuivuneet, eli aika turha homma.
Noh, kyllähän ne varmaan silittäessä kuivaa. (Täällä pitää
silittää ihan kaikki vaatteet, jotka on kuivunu edes hetken ulkona,
koska niihin munii joku mangokärpänen. Voitko kuvitella silittäväsi
alusvaatteesi joka pesun jälkeen? En minäkään, mutta maailma
avartaa.) Siivojan tullessa painelin toiseen huoneeseen silittämään
alusvaatteita, koska ajattelin sen olevan vähän turhan intiimiä
hommaa jollekin toiselle.
alusvaatteita, edes puhtaita. No, hän ei ollut asiasta moksiskaan ja
sanoi tekevänsä sen mielellään (ihana nainen!). Vihdoin sain
Tarinan opetus? No
eiköhän se tullut aika selväksi.
Pahoittelen tätä ylipitkää
monologia, mutta koin tarpeelliseksi jakaa tämän (yhden monista)
omituisuuden, joka tämän pienen ihmislapsen päässä pyörii.
Toivottavasti tarina oli opettaivainen. Tai edes viihdyttävä.

I learned something today, and it's not
even noon yet. I learned how much easier my life would be if I would
ask for some help occasionally. You see, I don't like to bother
people around me, so every issue that I have is either a) manageable
by myself and/or b) not important enough, so I rather solve it myself
while cursing silently in my mind. (This does not mean that I would
be bothered by someone asking help from me. Quite opposite, I do
enjoy helping other people most of the time.)
So I will tell you an example that
happened yesterday and this morning. My neighbor offered to wash our
laundry (in a way I could not politely refuse) because our washing
machine is still somewhere between Mombasa and Kampala. I was very
glad to say yes to her offer, because as most of the people I also
like wearing clean underwear. So yesterday morning she washed two
machines of our dirty clothes and I decided to put them drying on the
backyard where the previous tenant left her clothes lines. While
hanging the laundry there was a thought in my head that it might be
that the everyday afternoon rain comes way before the laundry is dry.
And so it happened that few hours later I had to gather all the damp
clothes and take them inside. But where to hang two machines of
laundry in nearly empty house. (We have two of 'pyykinkuivausteline'
aka 'Wäscheständer', the very intelligent invention that you open and hang you
clothes on, but they also are somewhere else than here right now.)
Did I ask help from the neighbor? No. Did I ask help from someone
else in the compound? Nope. I decided that this issue belongs to both
above categories and started putting up my very own
laundry-hanging-thing from some rope and two chairs. This was quite
quickly done and I was pretty proud of my work. Until I started to
hang the clothes. The two Ikea-chairs could not stand the weight of
the clothes and so very soon the clothes were in a neat pile on the
floor... Did I ask the lovely neighbor or our superhelpful cleaning
lady for help? Of course NOT. I decided to empty our storage on the
two chairs so they would stop moving. And after 10 kilos of cat litter, two crates of beer and other various things, they did! After an hour
from the start I could proudly admire this piece of art (I'm sorry I
don't have a picture, would be hilarious). So I closed the door and left the clothes
there. This morning I wanted to clean up my a tiny bit embarrassing
structure before the cleaning lady would come and see it. But I
noticed that the laundry was still not dry. “Well, it'll dry while
ironing”, I thought and cleaned the mess. (As a side note; you
have to iron everything you hung outside here, because of something
called mango flies. Have you ever thought of ironing your underwear?
Me neither, but traveling widens your world.) So when the cleaning
lady came I closed myself in another room to iron the underwear (as I
thought it's a bit rude to ask her to do that). After a while she
came to the room and was puzzled why am I ironing when she is here. I
murmured something about the underwear, but she did not see any issue
on ironing them also (what a lovely woman!). Well there, surrounded
by this friendliness I mentioned that most of the clothes were still
damp and two minutes later she came back with a brand-new
laundry-hanging-thingy* in her hands. She said she would like to
borrow it for me. And so, I hung the laundry for the third time but
this time with a big smile on my face. The teaching of this story? I
think you figured it already.
My apologies for this monolog, I just
thought it might be interesting to know what weird things move in
this weird little human's brain. I hope you learned something. Or
that it was at least entertaining.
*I finally checked the English word for this 'thingy': it's a rack, clothes rack!
